WOD, AMRAP, EMOM: CrossFit Terminology Decoded
Your first CrossFit class comes with a language barrier: the whiteboard says ‘21-15-9 thrusters and pull-ups for time’ and everyone nods while you quietly panic. Relax — the vocabulary is small and logical. Here’s the decoder ring.

The Big Three Formats
WOD = Workout of the Day, your class assignment. AMRAP = As Many Rounds/Reps As Possible in a set time. EMOM = Every Minute On the Minute, do the work, rest what’s left. Most classes are one of these.
Scoring and Structure
‘For time’ means finish the work fast, clock running. ‘21-15-9’ means rounds of those rep counts. ‘RX’ means as prescribed; ‘scaled’ means adjusted - and scaling is normal, smart and everywhere.

The Movement Shorthand
T2B (toes to bar), C2B (chest to bar), HSPU (handstand push-up), DU (double-unders - jump rope passing twice). You’ll learn them by doing their easier versions first. Every acronym has a beginner variant.
Equipment and Numbers
The ‘box’ is the gym itself; plates are counted in pounds or kilos per side; ‘the girls’ (Fran, Cindy) are benchmark workouts with names. Benchmarks let you track progress over months. Someday you’ll have a Fran time and opinions about it.
Culture Notes
‘3-2-1 go’ starts everything; cheering the last finisher is sacred; writing your score on the whiteboard is optional but celebrated. Nobody expects you to know things - they expect you to ask. The community is the actual secret sauce.
CrossFit’s language takes one week to learn and makes everything less intimidating: WODs come in AMRAPs and EMOMs, everything scales, and the whiteboard is just a menu. Walk in knowing the code and spend your energy on the workout - not the translation.
